A rare opportunity to own a beautiful stone house 600 metres up in Monchique / Picota mountain.
With majestic views over the south coast of the Algarve from Lagos to Spain. The top of Picota mountain is a short hike from the house. Its literally a paradise.
Our lovely house is totally off grid. We have no bills whatsoever. The 2.6ha of land has 2 wells and a water mine that all produce water year round. The mine water is pumped directly into the house producing the cleanest live water you’ve ever drank from.
The property also produces its own electricity and hot water through a solar system (the mains electric post is available if you chose so) We also produce all our own heating from the plethora of firewood available from the land.
The footprint of the house can be reconstructed with a project to up to 120m2.
The house:
The house is all natural stone with wooden ceiling and is 55m2 and has a mezzanine with bedroom upstairs and benefits from facing due south. Both the floor and ceiling have been double insulated and with only the wood burning stove that you cook on is enough the heat the house entirely without using the fireplace. Our house is shorts and T-shirts warm in winter and lovely and cool in summer. The kitchen is open plan and has a wood burning oven for cooking and heating. The house also has a fitted bathroom with bath / shower and toilet.
There is a grey water and black water system (the latter that runs to a septic tank)
The land:
Outside the house there is a wooden house that we use as a creative area and has a sofa bed for when friends and family stay.
Our vegetable garden produces all of our veggies (you’ll be hard pressed to find better soil anywhere in the Algarve) and there is also a wooden garden shed / storage.
The water mine / spring runs into a 3000 litre storage which is pumped directly into the house, irrigation, sprinkler system etc and the overflow goes into a beautiful pond teeming with wildlife and nature spirits.
There is also a wood storage shed and 2, 5000 litre water storage tanks.
We also have a shipping container for storage and a root cellar (with well) that we store our harvested and canned foods as well as grow our mushrooms in.
Below the house there is a 36m2 ruin that has permission to rebuild.
Above the land are various terraces planted with fruit trees and berry bushes that leads up to a huge well and another smaller ruin. The well is 8 metres deep and most of the plants trees, bushes, veggies etc are all watered by gravity.
There are a number of other as of yet unplanted terraces and a 2 year old food forest totalling over 200 hundred fruit, nut, berry bushes and trees etc.
The lowest part of the land has a ephemeral stream that you could dam if you wanted.
We have very few direct neighbours and all of the are amazing people that we are friends with. Monchique town is a 10 minute drive and Portimao and its beaches around half and hour.
We guaranteed you will not find another property anywhere in the Algarve like this.
Its very special and a shame we have to sell.
