Cabeceiras de Basto

“The municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto is strategically located in central Northern Portugal, in the transition zone between Minho and Trás-os-Montes, between urban and rural, and between the coast and the interior. The territory is strongly marked by the Cabreira mountains in the north and by the Tâmega river in the east and south. An ancient land full of colors and forms of extraordinary beauty”.

Cabeceiras de Basto, with its majestic XVII century St. Miguel monastery, is located in one of the most beautiful regions of Northern Portugal. Bordered by enchanting forests and majestic mountains (Cabreira, Barroso, Alvão) where powerful rivers are born, becoming tame in restful reservoirs or unforgettable river beaches, as is the case of the Ermal dam and the waterfalls of the Fisgas do Ermelo. Historical richness and monuments, ancestral traditions and customs, friendliness of local people, high quality local craftsmanship, and rich gastronomy, especially famous traditional dishes such as “posta barrosã” and “chanfana”(succulent lamb stewed in wine), are all reasons to spare to visit!

What to visit in Cabeceiras: Casa do Tempo Museum; Casa da Lã Museum (wool museum); Núcleo) Ferroviário de Arco de Baúlhe Museum; Tâmega Railway Line (Railroad of the Tâmega Valley)– linking Livração station (Marco de Canavezes), to the Linha do Douro, the Arco de Baúlhe station (Cabeceiras de Basto), with a total of 51,733 kilometers; Oural Dam; Moinhos de Rei park; amongst others
