It is the second largest city in the district of Guarda, belongs to the Intermunicipal Community of Beiras and Serra da Estrela and is roughly equidistant between the cities of Guarda and Viseu.

The municipality of Seia is, together with those of Covilhã and Manteigas, one of the municipalities that share the Tower (Serra da Estrela), the highest point in mainland Portugal and the second highest point in the country, only behind Pico Mountain, in the Azores.
