Tips For Choosing A Dog Based On Where You Live

Who doesn’t want to own a dog? But the real question is, how do you choose the right dog for you based on your living condition?

You may have finally decided that you want to be a dog parent. However, there are circumstances that can affect your decision of getting a furry baby.

We present to you these tips to help you identify the right dog breed based on your current living
environment.

House Size Matters
Like our favorite animal, our house or space can be big, small or just right. Some of us live in
apartments while others live with a yard. If you own a big house with lots of room, then there would be no problem choosing a large breed such as a Great Dane. This is because a Great Dane requires a big space and several rooms to feel comfortable. On the other hand, if you live in an apartment with limited space, it’s best to go for a breed of dog that is calm, easy to train, low-shedding and with low maintenance level. Among the best breeds that fit these criteria are poodles and chihuahuas.

Check Your Location
If you are renting or living in a condo, check your lease first or the Home Owner’s Association
guidelines to see if they have restrictions on the breed and weight of canines. Consider your neighbours’ peace, too. If you think the dog will be a barker and no one is at home to keep them engaged, you can drop your dog in a daycare kennel.

Be Mindful of Kids
If you also have young kids, the best option is to get an older, trained dog because they are calmer and obedient. You can safeguard your children by selecting a particular type of hound that works well with little ones. By doing so, you can keep your dog safe, too, from any harm your children can cause because they’re still innocent.

Your Climate and Land
Keep in mind that some dogs do better in certain climates in comparison to other breeds. For example, if your location in Portugal has plenty of hawks and birds of prey, then you can’t have a small dog wandering outside. On the other hand, if you live in the mountains which get very cold in winter, then a Siberian Husky would do well, but a hairless dog wouldn’t.

Lifestyle Upkeep
Consider how much time you can dedicate to your furry buddy. Do you have time to exercise and take long walks with your energetic dog? Can you also fit in your schedule their grooming? Some dogs need more work in brushing and grooming their coat. Take into account what coat type should your favorite animal have – a pooch with a wired, long, and curly coat means that there will be so much upkeep that you may have to bring them to a professional groomer.

You may want a specific breed, but you need to ensure that you can care for that breed and
provide an environment that will make your dog happy. So make sure that you use these tips to
find the right dog for your home. Please always try and rescue if you can! There are thousands of wonderful rescues in Portugal all desperate for a new loving family to take them!
