One of the most talked about Festas in Portugal is the Óbidos Medieval Festa & Market, which runs Thursday’s to Sunday’s between the   12th of July and the 5th of August, offering visitors the chance to feel as though they have been catapulted in time.  Many people get dressed up for the occasion (fancy dress hire is available locally) so you can walk down the narrow cobbled streets, mingling with actors and friends alike, all dressed in historic costumes.

Everywhere you look there is something to take over your senses, the vibrant banners and flags, the wooden houses positioned behind the imposing castle which are turned into a replica of a genuine medieval village, the jesters, musicians, dancers, noblemen and beggars will keep adults and children of all ages thoroughly entertained, offering an experience you will never forget.

The main area to see the action is next to the castle itself, where you will find jousting tournaments, medieval dinners and a market where you can buy everything from home made remedies to costumes and trinkets. Just aside from the market the informative craft demonstrations can be found, allowing you can watch traditional crafts taking place, and food wise, the meal staples of bread, meat and wine combined with lemon juice, olive oils and spices are bound to leave very full and happy.
